The drafting of patent applications and patent prosecution as well as the representation of clients in inter partes proceedings before the patent offices and the German patent court (Bundespatentgericht) are in the focus of Dr. Knöner’s work.

He has proven expertise in the fields of employee inventions and IP related transactions.

By building up an IP portfolio for a corporate unit of Siemens AG in an international setup, he has gained comprehensive practical experience in IP strategy and portfolio management.

 
Technical focus areas:
  • electrical and mechanical engineering, including signal processing and measurement technology.
  • He has further worked on in the areas of mobile communications, medical engineering, automobile technology and optics. 
  • As a physicist, he has hands on experience in the fields of solid state physics, mass spectrometry, X-ray scattering, laser physics and optics, including the respective measurement technologies.
 
Education and professional career:
  • Studies of Physics at Stuttgart University; degrees Dipl.-Phys. and M.Sc. in 2002 
  • International scholarship for the California State University
  • Ph.D. program at the University of Queensland, Australia; supported by the international postgraduate research scholarship of the Australian department of Education and Training; technical field of laser microscopy
  • Guest researcher at Harvard University and UCSD, San Diego
  • Awarded Ph.D. in 2006, Dean's commendation 
  • Patent attorney training, with training stages at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA), the German Patent Court (Bundespatentgericht) and District Court of Mannheim (litigation) 
  • Admitted at German patent attorney and European patent attorney in 2010
  • Practiced as patent attorney in a well-renowned Munich patent law firm
  • Senior IP counsel at Siemens AG, Munich; responsible for all IP related matters of a corporate unit with several European subsidiaries
  • Patent attorney and partner at Kahler Käck Mollekopf

Dr. Knöner loves to spend his spare time with his family. He is a water sports enthusiast and likes to climb a surfboard during his holidays and skiing in winter.
